Democrat Karen Middleton, a former member of the state Board of Education, was sworn in Wednesday as the new representative from District 42.
Middleton, D-Aurora, becomes the 22nd female member of the House Democratic Caucus. She also becomes the 36th female member of the General Assembly, which means Colorado now leads the nation in percentage of serving state legislators who are women.
Middleton was appointed Sunday, Feb. 10 to a vacancy created when former Rep. Michael Garcia, D-Aurora, resigned after being accused of unwelcome sexual advances to a lobbyist.

Terrance Carroll New Dem Assistant Leader in House
Rep. Terrance Carroll, D-Denver, was elected by fellow House Democrats to be the chamber's Assistant Majority Leader Tuesday.
Carroll, who now chairs the Judiciary Committee, edged Rep. Paul Weissman, D-Louisville, in the race for the leadership slot.
House Democrats needed to choose a new Assistant Majority Leader after Rep. Michael Garcia, D-Aurora, resigned earlier in the week.

Rep. Morgan Carroll to Seek Senate Seat
Rep. Morgan Carroll, D-Aurora, announced this week that she'll seek the Senate seat being vacated by term-limited Sen. Bob Hagedorn, D-Aurora, next January.
Carroll, who is the House Majority Caucus chair, was not expected to seek to move over to the Senate until former Rep. Michael Garcia, D-Aurora, suddenly resigned earlier in the week after being accused by a lobbyist of making unwelcome sexual advances.
Su Ryden, an Aurora businesswoman, is expected to seek the Democratic nomination for Carroll's house seat.

Rep. Garcia Resigns
Rep. Michael Garcia, D-Aurora, resigned from the House today.
Garcia had been accused by a lobbyist of exposing himself to her and then making an indecent proposition at a Denver bar. The accusation was made public in the Denver Post yesterday.
Garcia's name was not called during roll call this morning and his name on the electronic tally board had been taped over.
His resignation letter was read on the floor of the House this morning.
Garcia, who was the Assistant Majority Leader, was in his fourth and final term in the House. He had been expected to run for the Senate seat now held by term-limited Sen. Bob Hagedorn, D-Aurora.
